MAUI, HAWAII … The Pipiwai Trail

MAUI, HAWAII … The Pipiwai Trail, above the Seven Sacred Pools, is supposed to be one of the best hikes on Maui.  There are several great waterfalls along the route with the final destination fall being Waimoku Falls, falling 400-feet down a sheer lava rock wall shaped like a horse shoe.  This is the second time we have completed this little hike … the last was February, 2011.

Haleakala Crater, Hawaii

MAUI HAWAII … This 21 kilometer trek begins in thin air at 10,023 feet and descends into a nearly barren, eerie landscape made from a volcano’s lava flows (looks like the moon!).  We witnessed a wonderful sunrise above the clouds on top of a dormant volcano, then hiked 21 kilometers into the crater for an unforgettable experience.

Kalalau Trail, Hawaii

KAUAI, HAWAII … Na Pali Coast (meaning CLIFFS is Hawaiian) – 14 miles of sea cliffs ascending 3,000 feet above untamed shoreline, with sheer-walled valleys and cascading waterfalls. We did the first part of the Kalalau Trail (about 13km return).  It included a hike to Hanakapi`ai beech and waterfall. Lots of people have died at this beach after entering the water because of churning waves and strong rip currents.  What an amazing hike!  The movie, “The Perfect Getaway” was based on this hike and many other major motion pictures were filmed using the Na Pali Coast as a back drop. King Kong, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, and Pirates of the Caribbean just to name a few.

Nualolo and Awaawapuhi Loop, Hawaii

KAUAI, HAWAII … The Nualolo and Awaawapuhi Loop is a 16km loop that starts descending through a lush forest to panoramic vistas of the Na Pali coastline. The trail ends at a point 3,000 feet above the wind-swept cliffs of the Valley. We continued following a cliff trail that was 2 feet wide and was literally breaking away as we crossed it.

Waipo’o Falls / Canyon, Hawaii

KAUAI, HAWAII …  Waipoo Falls (or Waipo’o Falls) is one of a handful of waterfalls within the Waimea Canyon, also known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. I believe the waterfall drops over a height of 800ft in a pair of two visible tiers fed by the Koke’e Stream.  Waimea Canyon, is a mile wide, over 10 miles long, and almost 4,000 feet deep. The Canyon was formed not only by the steady process of erosion, but also by volcanic lava flows. Over time, the exposed has weathered from its original black to bright red.
